As Navmii embarks on a journey into the world of connect driving it feels like the perfect time to share Navmii’s history with our community – to delve into the accomplishments that have got us to today.
So where did it all begin?
Back in 2010, the brains behind the business, Peter Atalla (CEO), rounded up a team of smart, mapping enthusiasts to launch Navmii GPS Live on the iPhone. The company began with the power of 10 people. A few months later, we introduced NavFree the world’s first free GPS navigation app on the iPhone and not long after, Android. People loved it as navigation was increasingly going mobile and before we knew it, we had a whopping 2 million users.
Next we joined the Open Street Map (OSM) project, making its maps central to our product. OSM has community at its core, allowing you, our users, to update and amend the maps. At Navmii we believe that together we can make maps, navigation and travelling better for everyone!
Soon, the potential of our product as a business driver started to become clear. We began to consider options to increase revenue stream and became a mapping/navigation services provider. Our first significant client came in the form of Ocado – the British online supermarket. We are proud to say that we have powered and navigated Ocado’s fleet for more than three years – making sure your food shop always gets delivered on time.
So what happened next?
Between 2012 and 2014, Navmii’s passion for development drove our first round of funding with Talis Capital for £2million. Development was fast – quickly reaching 28 country maps and then 52 just months later.
2014 was Navmii’s year of data development – we developed our big data platform with a huge 4-6 billion traffic data points per month. This development was recognised by Nokia who bought Navmii’s traffic data a few months later.
NavFree was rebranded in 2015 into the Navmii app we know today. This reflected our drive into smart navigation and the moment the pieces of the puzzle began to come together! This year has seen a B2B partnership with Microsoft, the addition of driver scores, the availability of 85 country maps and hitting a huge 26 million downloads.
The Navmii team is now 40 people strong and constantly evolving. Navmii may well have had a successful past but this is just the beginning. The current technology landscape and forecast for the future provides us with the platform to make our connected driving goals a reality.
We are truly grateful for the Navmii community and would not be where we are today if it was not for your support and dedication to making Navmii the best navigation app on the planet.
In a bid to repay you, not only do you have the chance to own a slice of the Navmii pie and truly become part of the team via our Crowdcube campaign but we are also committed to providing you with the ultimate, personal driving assistant. Future developments will ensure Navmii is entirely in tune with your style of driving and intuitive enough to ensure that every single one of your future journeys is as stress free and as smart as possible – we are the future of connected driving in the navigation space.
